Infrastructure
The Council owns and looks after over $6 billion worth of assets, including tunnels, bridges, reservoirs, and retaining walls, and we regularly undertake projects to make them stronger and safer.
Transport infrastructure
Over the last 10 years we have been strengthening roads and bridges on critical routes throughout the city. This includes strengthening work to critical tunnels such as the Hataitai and Karori tunnels. We’ve also built new retaining walls designed to perform well in earthquakes.
Water infrastructure
The Council has been replacing older pipes with newer, more resilient pipes. We are also upgrading critical water mains with work currently focused on the central city and Te Aro.
We’re also upgrading reservoirs, which means we can retain as much water as possible within our larger reservoirs after an earthquake. We are now planning a new reservoir to serve Wellington Hospital and the inner city in an emergency.
Council properties
The Council has carried out strengthening to a number of our buildings over the past few years, including upgrades to suburban library buildings, community halls, and heritage buildings. We’ve also carried out extensive upgrades to a number of our city housing buildings.
