Bike network plan

Find out about our 10-year plan for developing a citywide bike network in Wellington.

Wellington City's population is forecast to grow by more than 50,000 over the next 30 years. This is going to place extra pressure on the transport network.

A safe and comprehensive cycle network will:

  • reduce emissions from road transport
  • make it easier for everyone to get around in low or zero carbon ways
  • open our streets for people of all ages and abilities
  • connect places where people want to go.

The bike network plan guides the development of our cycle network and explains the approach, strategic rationale and how we will work with the community to put new lanes in place.

Wellington Cycleways Masterplan 2015

This has now been updated and replaced by Paneke Pōneke – bike network plan.

Cycling Framework

The Council's Cycling Framework sets out our approach to building Wellington's cycle network.

The framework outlines the:

  • overall network plan (what we are trying to connect from where)
  • the types of cycleways we want to create
  • who we are trying to attract
  • the design principles for the type of cycleway we choose to use
  • the decision principles for how these are applied to real locations
  • the limits for decisions that we will make within the scope of the policy and for decisions that will require further Councillor input.

The framework principles and network plan were agreed at a full Council meeting on 24 June 2015.

Wellington City Cycle Network Strategic Case

The Wellington City Cycle Network Strategic Case outlines the case for change. It says investment in cycling will improve safety for cyclists, increase transport choice, and lessen environmental impact and traffic congestion by reducing the number of vehicles on the road. In turn, this will make the city a better place to live in.

Cycle Network Programme Business Case

The Wellington Cycle Network Programme Business Case outlines the need for investment in cycling infrastructure, education and promotion to improve the current levels of cycling in a safe and efficient environment.
