Earthquake mitigation research

The Council works with the Government and other agencies to see where help can be given to owners faced with strengthening earthquake-prone buildings.

We also support the work being done by Quake Core, a joint project between Auckland and Canterbury Universities. Quake Core’s aim is to produce new knowledge on the seismic response and vulnerabilities of our built environment. It has a focus on designing new technologies and guidance that will enable NZ communities to rapidly recover from earthquakes.

It’s Our Fault

We’ve supported this GNS-run programme for several years. The project’s aim is to understand the Wellington Fault and the risk it poses to the region.

This programme has enabled GNS to better understand how the fault behaved in the past in generating major earthquakes. This meant GNS was able to reassess the risk of a major quake on the fault. GNS is currently looking at better understanding the effects of ground shaking and the impacts, both to our buildings and community, of an earthquake.
