Stories for winter nights

With the first snow falling on the Remutaka Range, winter has definitely arrived. We asked our librarians what books they turn to when the Wellington weather keeps them indoors – or when they need inspiration before setting off on their next windswept adventure!

A stack of books.

In the Clearing by J.P. Pomare
J.P. Pomare has been hailed as one of New Zealand’s best new crime writers, and In the Clearing shows why. Follow Amy and Freya as their lives intertwine amongst a mysterious community based on the real-life cult, The Family.

Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward
Ranked as one of the best books of the past decade, Sing, Unburied, Sing tells the story of 13-year-old Jojo as he journeys to Parchman prison, Mississippi, to pick up his estranged father. Magical and harrowing.

Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link
It’s not often you find a book that can be terrifying and hilarious at the same time, but that’s exactly what awaits you from the very first story in this fantastic collection.

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
A favourite of librarians across the city, Gideon the Ninth by New Zealand author Tamsyn Muir is taking the sci-fi world by storm. It’s also shortlisted for the upcoming Hugo Awards – so grab a copy while you can!

Salt Slow by Julia Armfield
With its pinafore-wearing wolves and riot-inducing musicians, Salt Slow is a natural successor to the works of the legendary Angela Carter. As beautiful as it is uncanny, this collection will stay with you long after winter is over.
