It’s the long Easter weekend coming up and we’re all excited about enjoying a few hot cross buns and a sleep in – if the little ones let you!

Chocolate eggs and treats aside, it’s going to look a little different this year, given we’ll be spending it mostly within our own little bubbles. If your bubble includes kids of any age, we’ve got some great ideas and activities to keep them engaged and entertained at home. Check them out here so you can stay home, stay safe.

1.       Enter our Easter colouring comp. Following on from Mitten’s debut last week, this week we’re introducing an Easter special. Take a snap of your entry and tag us @wgntcc on Facebook or Instagram to go in the draw to win some cool prizes.

2.       Take a moment of mindfulness. In these fantastic YouTube resources, local yoga teacher Jase Te Patu takes you through a journey of Māori storytelling and movement to teach kids simple mindfulness tools like breath and visualisation. Listen in, and you too might learn a thing or two.

3.       Decorate some eggs. Yes real ones, although we’d reccommend hard boiling them first. Grab some paints, felt tips, glue and glitter as well as anything else you’ll need to create some fabulous eggs. If you’re after a bit of inspiration check out this blog.

4.       Get out the Lego. WellingtonNZ and Lego present: The great WellingtonNZ Brick Challenge. You (and your kids) can win great prizes by creating an iconic Wellington scene using nothing more than imagination and Lego bricks. More info here.

5.       Get crafty with your recycling. Refill NZ are running a Kid’s Recycling Craft Challenge over the next two weeks. There will be a new theme every four days starting with an Easter theme this weekend! If you take a snap and tag your creation on their Facebook page you’ll go in the draw to win some epic prizes.

6.       Hot cross bliss balls. Hot cross buns...but with a healthy twist. These fun little balls get all their sweetness from natural sugars and have just four ingredients. Once everything is blended, you can get the kids to help you roll them up – you could even add some white icing crosses if you’re going for the traditional look! See the recipe.

7.       Tune in for storytime. Wellington City Libraries are live streaming storytime on their Facebook page Monday to Friday at 10.30am and Saturdays at 2pm. Get cosy and join them this Saturday for half an hour of stories and songs. Click going on the event to be notified.

8.       Decorate a window. As the clocks go back and the days get shorter, get inspired and turn your window into a magical wonderland with fairy lights, rainbows, eggs, and of course the bears, for families and your community to enjoy on their twilight adventures.
