During consultation of the Golden Mile Plan the public was exempt from the 5 options on the table by decision of the stakeholders some with commercial interests, who picked Manners Mall.
A safety audit by Beca Infrastructure Consultants has identified significant and serious safety concerns. Andy Foster said on RNZ they won't be able to fix it all short of removing trees and erecting fences.
Background information
In 2009 the council was told in a report from Jones Lang LaSalle and on page 16 referring to the overseas experience on the disadvantages of opening a pedestrian mall to traffic and that it would increase the risk of collisions and accidents.
