WARE – Wellington Asia Residency Exchange programme

WARE is an artist-in-residence programme in partnership that has two facets – residency and exchange.

How it works

The Wellington Asia Residency Exchange (WARE) is an artist-in-residence programme that has two facets – residency and exchange.

WARE generally supports one residency and one exchange each year: one artist from Asia will visit Wellington, and one Wellington artist will go to either of Wellington's sister cities, Beijing or Xiamen in China. The Council is currently reviewing the exchange facet of the WARE programme and will not offer that facet this year, 2019.

Residency

Residency artists must be from Asia and will be invited by an arts organisation or institution. They will stay at the historic Bolton Street Sexton’s Cottage.

Exchange

Exchange artists will be Wellington-based. In the past they have been accommodated by either Red Gate Gallery in Beijing or the Chinese European Arts Centre (CEAC) in Xiamen.

Council are reviewing Chinese arts organisations and may offer new destinations for Wellington-based artists in 2020 or 2021.
