Social media at Wellington City Council

Our social media channels enable us to connect and engage in real-time conversations directly with Wellingtonians. Shared content and conversations help develop community spirit, greater awareness of events, and news and information.

The main purpose of using social media is to inform Wellingtonians about issues, initiatives and opportunities that may affect them, with the underlying objectives of:

  • Increasing public participation in Council activities, discussions, and physical resources like pools and libraries
  • Improving the Council’s reputation by creating and sharing stories that showcase the people, places, projects and initiatives we are investing in
  • Demonstrating value for money by raising awareness of where rates are invested, showcasing what the Council does and encouraging more people to use Council services.

We have the following social media channels.

We respect everyone’s right to express their thoughts and opinions and encourage constructive dialogue among members of this group. However, we do please ask you to remember that if your contributions don’t comply with not only the social media platform terms, but our House Rules too, then we may remove them, and if you don’t adhere to them then we may block you from posting to the Wellington City Council social media channels.

While we moderate our pages, we do hope to create a community with you that is built on respect with a culture of self-moderation. So, we’ve kept it to some basic rules that we ask you to keep in mind.

Keep your post nice. Do not include content, image or links to things which could be considered obscene, offensive, defamatory, threatening, harassing, overtly sexual, discriminatory or hateful to another person or organisation - including us, our partners, our employees and other people or organisations.

This is a spam free zone. So, no repeat posts please or unsolicited ads. Please no multiple or repetitive posts by a single user, or repetitive posts copied and pasted or duplicated by single or multiple users.

Keep post relevant to the Wellington City Council page and thread.

Please do not post any of your own or anyone else’s personal information.

No electioneering. The Wellington City Council social media pages must not be used for electioneering purposes. Any post –positive or negative– made by any individual specifically relating to their own –or someone else's– nomination, intention to run for Council or election campaign, will be removed immediately.

We welcome your feedback, both positive and negative, and will endeavour to respond to your comments when we can.

While we support lively, open discussion, we reserve the right at our discretion to delete any comments that don’t comply with our rules or which we otherwise think are inappropriate and (if required) block users.

That’s enough of the serious stuff. Now let’s have some fun. Make a post, add a comment and get involved. We look forward to interacting with you, thanks for following our page.
