The focus of the relationship has been on trade and business growth. The relationship was downgraded to a friendly city relationship in 1996 following an external relations activity review due to a decrease in activity and the lack of an association to manage the relationship.
As a result of the International Relations Policy review issued in 2013, it was decided that Wellington would begin to explore ways in which to reignite the Wellington – Sydney relationship. The sister city status was successfully reinstated and, in 2014 Mayor Wade-Brown visited Sydney to participate in Walk 21 Sydney and met with Mayor Clover Moore to discuss opportunities for further cooperation.
Currently, the Wellington – Sydney relationship focuses on tourism opportunities through WREDA. The two cities have also connected through their mutual affiliation with the 100 Resilient Cities Programme.
