A new supermarket is being built there and this work will make this busy intersection safer and less congested.

Part of Adelaide Road will be widened to make four lanes instead of three at the John Street traffic lights, so that vehicles going straight ahead and those turning right into John Street will have their own lanes.

There will be a separate lane for cars turning right into the supermarket car park from Adelaide Road.

The roads through the intersection will be resurfaced with new lane markings and places for cyclists to wait at the traffic lights. The upgrade will include new lights, trees and a small park on Adelaide Road between John Street and Hospital Road.

Trolley bus wires through the intersection will also be replaced by Wellington Cable Car Limited during this project - at night and weekends to minimise disruption.

Work starts next month and is due to finish in June.
