Use these tips from the Council's professional photographers to improve your photography.

  • Get close to the subject and fill the frame.
  • Try using a flash outside - it fills in shadows and can make a portrait more flattering.
  • Keep horizon lines straight unless using a different angle on purpose.
  • Shoot at the highest resolution available to your camera.
  • In low light, lean on something to help keep your camera steady or use a tripod.
  • Use different apertures (camera lens openings) to reduce or extend the blurriness in the background.
  • Use different shutter speeds to freeze or blur moving things.
  • Take spare batteries.
  • Keep an eye on backgrounds as they can be distracting to otherwise good photos.
