Loop Walks

These walks have a common entry and exit point.

The walks are suitable for those with average fitness, except for the Otari Skyline Loop which has a steep and demanding track.

The information sheets for each walk give:

  • more details of the track
  • points of interest
  • facilities available
  • bus route numbers (if applicable) to get to and from the walk.

Eastern Walkway Loop to Breaker Bay

A 4.2km walk that takes about 1½ to 2 hours.

Starting at Tarakena Bay on Wellington's south coast, the walk has entry / exit points from Bury Grove, Sidlaw Street, Signallers Grove and Inglis Street (Pass of Branda).

Along the walk there are Māori historial sites and the Ataturk Memorial and spectacular views of Wellington harbour.

Khandallah Park Loop

A 4.2km walk that takes about 3 hours.

Starting at Simla Crescent the walk goes along the Northern Walkway up to the top of Mount Kaukau where there are picnic areas. At the summit, you go onto the Skyline Walkway and come back down behind Khandallah Swimming Pool.

Mount Albert Loop

A 2km walk that takes about 1½ hours.

Follow the Southern Walkway from Melrose Park along the ridge toward the summit. At the water reservoir a four-wheel drive track leads to the hockey stadium. A side track off this leads back to Melrose Park.

The walk goes behind Wellington Zoo, giving views of Cook Strait. It also includes Four Cross Track - a specialised mountain bike downhill race track, suitable for those at an intermediate level.

Mount Victoria Loop

Mount Victoria loop

A 4.7km walk, taking about 2½ hours.

Starting at Charles Plimmer Park at the top of Majoribanks Street, the walk goes on the Hataitai to City Walkway. The walk then joins on to the Southern Walkway to the top of Mount Alfred then onto the Newtown to Hataitai Walkway and back to the city.

The walk includes a mountain bike skills area for intermediate bikers and views of the city, harbour, Newtown and Hataitai.

Otari Skyline Loop

A 4.5km walk, taking about 2½ hours. Steep and demanding track.

This walk through Otari-Wilton's Bush goes through to the Troup Picnic Area onto the Blue Trail, Kohekohe Track and Yellow Track back down. The walk features native birds and an 800-year-old rimu tree.

Pohill Reserve Loop

A 5.6km walk, taking about 2 hours.

Starting in Aro Street, the walk goes onto the Transient track and to the wind turbine in Brooklyn. The walk then continues on to the Zealandia fence line and back down to Holloway Road.

Tawatawa Reserve Loop

A 2.8km walk, taking about 1½ hours.

Starting on Murchison Street, this walk goes on to the ridgeline and reservoir, then on to the City to Sea Walkway and up steps. The walk continues on to the western ridge down to the Tawatawa Reserve.

The walk includes a mountain bike area for intermediate bikers.

Te Ahumairangi Hill Loop

A 2.7km walk, taking about 1½ - 2 hours.

Starting on Grant Road, the walk heads up to the Northern Walkway and pine and macrocarpa forest. Then past an old quarry and returning to Grant Road. You can also choose a shorter or longer version of this walk.

Trelissick Park Loop

A 3km walk, taking about 2 hours.

Entrance to the walk is through Trelissick Park. The walk follows the Kaiwharawhara Street and past the old powder magazine store. The walk then continues on to the Sanctuary to Sea Walkway along the ridgeline, and uphill onto the Northern Walkway.

Wrights Hill Loop

A 1.3km walk, taking about 1½ hours.

Starting at Wrights Hill Road, going on to John's Track then onto Lookout Track. Continuing on until you reach the gun emplacements and then on to the Zealandia fenceline and towards the Parade Ground.

The walk includes a mountain bike area for intermediate bikers.
