Wellington City Council maintains a network of walkways which vary in landscape and take in scenic views of the city and coast.

Town Belt

Wellington's Town Belt - extending for 425ha through the city - has an extensive walking track network. The Town Belt is public land and accessible from a number of points around the city. It offers the feeling of being miles from city life, without having to leave town.

There are several inner city heritage trails encompassing Wellington landmarks and historic sites.

Zealandia

Zealandia at Waiapu Road, Karori, is a sanctuary for native birds, plants and environmental enthusiasts. Set amongst 252ha of native forest, the sanctuary is a tranquil place to walk. There are a variety of walking trails and guided tours.

Zealandia is open daily. Admission charges apply.

Te Araroa Trail

The Te Araroa Trail stretches the length of New Zealand. The local section of this track runs from Shorland Park in Island Bay to the Wellington Botanic Garden and on to Porirua (36km). It follows existing tracks and roads.

Volunteer to Create Trails

The Council is working with Wellington Trails Alliance (WTA) to create trails for mountain bikers, walkers and runners. They've extended trail networks all over Wellington, particularly on the Town Belt, Polhill Reserve and Miramar Peninsula.

Parts of the walkways are open to mountain bikes except for the Eastern Walkway and the City to Sea Walkway, which are closed to mountain bikes.
