Sewage is waste from all sinks, toilets, laundries, kitchens and bathrooms. This waste flows through a sewerage network of underground pipes and pumping stations to one of three treatment plants throughout the city.

The Council manages the sewerage network and performs regular maintenance, upgrade and renewal programmes.

Sewerage network facts:

  • 1022km of pipes
  • 62 pump stations
  • 3 treatment plants
  • 1 dewatering plant
  • 24 million litres of sewage per year
  • 58 years average age of network pipes
  • $580 million replacement value

Wastewater

A property owner is responsible for repairs and maintenance of the wastewater pipe between the building and its public main connection. This part of the drainage system, known as the lateral, belongs to the property owner.

Wastewater pipes have a lifespan of about 80 years, and are designed to withstand normal tree root and traffic loadings. Age is often a factor when pipes become blocked or seep.

To find out what is causing a pipe problem, you should call a plumber or, alternatively, you can call the Council to request a maintenance inspection of the public mains. The owner is liable for any repair costs on their pipe.
