Wheelie bin.

All households outside the central business district can have a kerbside recycling collection service.

To find out how to sort your recycling refer to:

Sorting and Preparing Your Recycling

Collection Arrangements

The recycling collections are on alternate weeks:

  • one week: paper, metal and plastic in wheelie bins or recycling plastic bags
  • next week: glass in the 45-litre green recycling crates.

Calendars show you which week to put out your wheelie bin or recycling bag and which week to put out your glass crate.

To work out which calendar to use, look up your street on the list below to see which calendar to use:

Calendars

Wheelie bins, bags and crates need to be placed as close to the kerb as possible by 8.00am on your collection day - but not before 7.00pm the night before collection.

Wheelie Bins, Bags & Crates

Use the Council wheelie bins or green recycling bags for your paper, metals and plastic recyclable materials, and the 45-litre green crate for glass only.

Wheelie Bins

Every Council wheelie bin has an address sticker, and an individual serial number heat stamped into it. The Council has recorded the serial number against the address the bin is issued to.

Do not take the bin with you when you move properties - the bin belongs to the property.

Lost or Stolen Wheelie Bins

You can get a replacement wheelie bin if yours is lost or stolen. You need to pay a service fee - this covers our costs in replacing and delivering the bins.

Service fee: $80

The fee can be paid at our Service Centre at 101 Wakefield Street. Alternatively, you can send a cheque with a note stating that it's for a replacement wheelie bin and give your residential address for delivery. Send the cheque to:

Recycling Administration Team, CitiOperations
Wellington City Council
PO Box 2199
Wellington

We need to get payment before we can deliver the bin (a receipt will be given over the counter or posted to you). Keep your receipt for any future queries. When payment has cleared, we'll deliver a wheelie bin in seven working days.

Note:
We only replace existing wheelie bins. If you have moved into a property that doesn't have a wheelie bin or green crate, or you have received recycling bags and would like to be assessed for a wheelie bin, phone us on (04) 499 4444 to ask for an assessment.

Recycling Bags

Addresses unsuitable for a wheelie bin will receive a delivery of 52 recycling bags once a year.

The next delivery will be from the end of April to the end of May 2012.

The same type of recycling materials that can go in the wheelie bin can also go into these recycling bags.

More Bags

If you need more recycling bags, you can buy them from the Council's Service Centre at 101 Wakefield Street and from the libraries in Kilbirnie, Newtown, Johnsonville and Tawa.

Cost: A pack of 26 bags is $6.

45-Litre Green Crates

An official Council 45-litre recycling crate must be used for your recyclable glass, ie Glass bottles and jars only.

There is a limit of two official glass crates per household that can be collected each fortnight.

Buying a Crate

You can buy a glass recycling crate from the Council's Service Centre at 101 Wakefield Streett and from the libraries in Kilbirnie, Newtown, Johnsonville and Tawa.

Cost: $15

For more detailed information, refer to:

Assessment of Private Streets

We have assessed known private streets to establish whether they are safe to collect from. We have to make sure our collection will not cause harm to people or property.

Our safety assessment looked at truck access and turning areas, in particular:

  • Is the street wide enough for collection trucks?
  • Do any parked vehicles limit access?
  • Are there overhanging electricity wires or trees that could be damaged or damage collection trucks?
  • Is there a designated area kept free of parked vehicles or other impediments that trucks can turn in?

We have advised known private street residents of their street's safety assessment.

If for safety reasons we can't collect from a private street, we will collect rubbish and recycling in Council-approved containers from the nearest public road.

Cost

The recycling system is funded from rubbish bag sales, landfill fees and the waste minimisation levy. It is not paid for from rates.
