Recycling in Schools

Schools can apply for a recycling grant or kerbside collection service for their recycling.

Grants

Schools can apply to the Educational Facility Grant Pool for up to $150 per year to support school recycling.

The purpose of the grant is to give financial support to education facilities to improve their waste recycling.

The grant is a way of recognising that recycling in schools and early learning centres is an effective way of promoting waste education.

All schools that meet these criteria will receive the grant:

  • Your organisation is a registered facility with the Ministry of Education that is not part of another business.
  • Your organisation is not a tertiary institution and is not included in the Ministry of Education's tertiary institution list.
  • Your organisation can prove a link between recycling and your waste education programme.
  • Your organisation can prove that you had a private recycling collection contract before receiving the grant.

To register an interest in receiving this grant, complete and return the following form:

The application form is also available from the Council Service Centre, 101 Wakefield Street.

Kerbside Collection Service for Small Learning Centres

Small early learning centres with about the same amount of recycling as a home, may be able to get our kerbside service if this is preferable to having the grant.

These are the criteria for the kerbside collection service:

  • Recycling fits in one wheelie bin, or two recycling bags and one green crate - per week on alternate weeks.
  • We are already servicing homes in the collection street.
  • Putting recycling on the kerbside doesn't create a hazard for those using the footpath.
  • Collection times for that street are outside the times children at the centre are dropped off or picked up.

Not-for-Profit Organisations

The Council can provide a kerbside recycling service to small community centres and not-for-profit organisations.

To receive this service, the following criteria need to be met for the entire time the service is provided:

  • Our collectors can safely collect the wheelie bin or recycling bag and green crate from the kerbside on a residential street and we are already collecting recycling from homes in the street.
  • The volume of recycling can't be more than one wheelie bin, or two recycling bags and one green crate - per week on alternate weeks.
  • The organisation is a non-profit organisation that exists for educational, charitable or religious purposes.
