Kai to Compost is a food waste collection service for businesses and apartment dwellers in Wellington city.
The service aims to minimise the environmental problems caused by food waste in landfills.
Kai to Compost Process
Kai to Compost customer
The Council provides businesses with 120 litre or 240 litre wheelie bins. Businesses put their food scraps and leftovers into the bin and the Council empties the bin when it's full.
After each empty, the Council will clean the bin with a power washer.
The food waste is deposited at the Council's compost facility, mixed with green waste and bio-solids and turned into compost that is sold to local gardens, orchards and vineyards.
What to Compost
Put the following items in your Kai to Compost bin:
- vegetable and fruit scraps
- cooked or uncooked meat
- leftover meals
- pasta and rice
- breads and baking products
- nuts and cereals
- coffee grounds and filters
- tea bags and tea leaves
- cheeses and desserts
- paper hand towels and serviettes
- flowers or plants
Avoid putting bones, liquids and general rubbish and recycling in your bin.
Cost
Kai to Compost will cost you $5 per bin per collection.
There is also a monthly administration and bin hire charge of $5 for the first bin and $3 for each additional bin.
Prices exclude GST.
Collection Days
The Council provides the service from Monday to Saturday and can cater the collection service to suit your needs.
Some businesses have multiple bins collected daily and other businesses have one bin collected once a week.
