Wellington's environmental community groups play an active and important role in protecting Wellington's environment.
Their activities include:
This voluntary action makes a huge contribution to biodiversity management.
The Council supports community environmental groups through the community greening programme. Advice and assistance is provided to community groups who wish to look after their local park or reserve.
The Council can support those wanting to set up a group, and can provide advice on developing restoration plans and funding environmental projects. We can help organise, publicise and provide practical help for working bees. We can also provide free native eco-sourced plants and assistance with site preparation.
To participate, join one of the community groups currently involved in environmental projects within Council parks and reserves.

It is important for anyone working in the outdoors to be aware of any potential hazards they may be exposed to and the appropriate safety procedures.
There are potential hazards involved with any community environmental project, but with care and common sense they can be easily minimised or eliminated.
Contact the Senior Park Ranger before you begin any work and arrange for a health and safety induction.
