Wellington's environmental community groups play an active and important role in protecting Wellington's environment.
Their activities include:
This voluntary action makes a huge contribution to biodiversity management.
The Council supports environmental community groups through the community greening programme. Advice and assistance is provided to community groups who wish to look after their local park or reserve.
The Council can support those wanting to set up a group, and can provide advice on developing restoration plans and funding environmental projects. We can also help organise, publicise and provide practical help for working bees.
Environmental community groups working in Council parks and reserves can receive up to 500 free native plants to enhance biodiversity. Groups meeting certain criteria can apply for more than 500 plants - discuss this with the Council prior to ordering.
Plants must be ordered between 1 September and 30 November each year and groups must have prior agreement with the Council regarding the location and type of work.
Community Greening Plant Order Form
Groups will able to fill in plant delivery details online during March and April 2012. Groups who have ordered plants will be informed when this is active. Please note that during 2012 groups will be able to receive plants from mid May until mid August and deliveries will be restricted to Fridays only.
The Council also provides free native plants for planting on road reserves and reserves next to private property.
Community groups and private landowners can apply for funding for ecological restoration projects. The list below provides information and contact details for organisations, government departments and ministries that can supply this funding:

It is important for anyone working in the outdoors to be aware of any potential hazards they may be exposed to and the appropriate safety procedures.
There are potential hazards involved with any community environmental project, but with care and common sense they can be easily minimised or eliminated.
Contact the Senior Park Ranger before you begin any work and arrange for a health and safety induction.
