Wellington City Council and the New Zealand Academy of Sport (North Island) have allocated funding for the development of talented young sportspeople in Wellington through to 2010.
The aim of the Sports Talent Development programme is to increase the number of Wellington sportspeople achieving international sporting success.
2007 Funding Allocations
The inaugural funding round for the Sports Talent Development Programme was allocated in December 2007.
The six organisations selected are focusing on a range of development opportunities to develop young talent in Wellington.

Development Projects
The programme funds talent development projects aligned to national or regional sports organisation development pathways. It supports Sport and Recreation New Zealand's approach to national talent development
Funding of up to $15,000 annually per applicant will be managed by the Academy of Sport. It will be used for athlete and coach development in areas including strength and conditioning, mental skills, coaching workshops, personal development, and injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Criteria for Applicants
Applications are open to local sporting organisations interested in receiving a share of the funding.
The recipient sportspeople must be 16 - 18 years old, and live in Wellington or play for a Wellington representative side.
Coaches must be able to offer the required development, and have worked with talent development athletes.
Key criteria include:
- an ability to contribute either to SPARC’s national high performance objectives or to programmes of significance to the Wellington region
- the sport’s ability (through national/regional sports organisations) to develop talented athletes and coaches
- the importance of the sport to Wellington.
