Wellington City Council aims to make it easier for all Wellingtonians to enjoy healthy, active lifestyles.

The Council actively helps individuals and community groups participate in, and deliver, recreation activities. This includes providing sports facilities, maintaining the natural environment, facilitating events, and funding individual and organisational sporting goals.

Sports and recreational facilities maintained and operated by the Council include sports grounds, swimming pools, recreation and sports centres, community centres and halls, botanic gardens and parks, beaches and coastal areas, walkways and cycling tracks, and children's play areas.

Support

Support available includes:

  • recreation advice and training
  • activity discounts
  • equipment hire
  • specialised support for people with special needs
  • funding for the development of promising young sportspeople.

Wellington City Council is working with the New Zealand Academy of Sport (North Island) to fund a new Sports Talent Development programme aimed at increasing the number of Wellington sportspeople achieving international sporting success.

Projects underway or recently completed include a new indoor community sports centre in Kilbirnie, upgrading sporting facilities at Newtown Park, a shallow water play area at the Regional Aquatic Centre, and upgrades to Scorching Bay and Cog Park.
