The 1991 Resource Management Act (RMA) requires that the Council takes into account the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi in managing natural and physical resources.

The Council recognises the Wellington Tenths Trust and Te Runanga o Toa Rangatira as Treaty partners.

Consultation

The RMA has a particular focus on land-use activities. The Council is responsible for consulting iwi on issues such as:

  • resource consent applications
  • land use consent
  • subdivision consent
  • types of discharge consents
  • changes to the District Plan
  • development of policy statements including the District Plan
  • protection of sacred sites (waahi tapu)
