The Council performs a range of roading services and activities, including:

  • maintaining 654 kilometres of road surface
  • maintaining 814 kilometres of footpaths
  • maintaining over 18,000 traffic and street signs
  • maintaining cycle lanes throughout the city
  • co-ordinating all city road works performed by the Council, utilities, private contractors and the public
  • managing traffic issues and improvements
  • setting requirements for all roadworks

If you have any problems with street or footpath surfaces in your area, or if you have an enquiry about planned street activities, contact the Council's Transport Group.

Getting Permission from Council

If you're planning any kind of work or activity on or near a road or footpath, you may need to get permission from Roading Operations. This applies to:

  • residents working on driveways and footpaths
  • utility roadworks
  • private construction contractors
  • street events that affect normal vehicle or pedestrian traffic

Transit Roads

Transit operates roads within the Wellington City Council area.

Permission must be obtained for any activity that may affect traffic flows on these roads.

Each year, the Council receives funding from Land Transport New Zealand for roading and traffic contracts. The contracts are procured in compliance with Land Transport New Zealand's Competitive Pricing Procedures (CPP).
