To avoid penalties, you must pay your instalments in full by the following due dates:

1 September first instalment due
1 December second instalment due
1 March third instalment due
1 June fourth instalment due

How Rates are Billed

A rating year begins on 1 July and ends on 30 June. The rating year is divided into four equal instalments, each invoiced separately.

With your first invoice for the year, you will receive a 'Rates Assessment Notice'. It tells you the total amount you will pay for the entire year to both Wellington City and Greater Wellington Regional Councils.

Throughout the year, you will receive four rates invoices, one every three months. They arrive about one month before the due date and must be paid in full and on time.

You can now choose to get your rates invoice emailed to you instead of getting them by post - just complete this form:

As well as saving printing and postage costs, getting rates invoices by email adds to the Council's sustainability efforts by saving significant amounts of paper and energy.

Emailed rates invoices are sent out 1 month before the due date.

Go in the Draw to Win a Rates Rebate

You can go in the quarterly draw to win a $350 rebate on your rates payment if you:

  • are a Wellington City Council ratepayer
  • opt-in to get your rates invoices by email
  • are up to date with your rates payments.

The quarterly draw prize increases to a $500 rates rebate if you also choose to pay your rates by direct debit (or if you are already doing so):

Use the opt-in form above before 15 July 2012 to be eligible for the first quarterly draw in early August 2012.

The winner is selected randomly every quarter, 1 month before the rates instalment is due, until August 2013.

Penalties

A 10% penalty will be added to any amount of the current instalment remaining unpaid after the due date.

An additional charge of 10% will be added on 1 October and 1 April of each year to any unpaid rates from previous years.
