Rates Explained - Rates Rebates

Print Page

Residential ratepayers on low incomes, up to $23,240 per annum, may be eligible for a rate rebate of up to $580 for the current rating year. You can seek a rebate for the current rating year only. The rebate is deducted from the second rates instalment.

Each application is judged against criteria set by the Government. The criteria covers many points and, although the income limit is $23,240, you still may qualify for a rebate with a higher income figure if you have dependants, or if your rates are high.

Rates Postponement

Ratepayers who face severe financial hardship caused by circumstances beyond their control may apply for a rates postponement to defer some or all of their annual rates.

Each case is considered on its merits and may only be approved when:

  • the applicant has exhausted all alternative payment and finance options
  • the applicant has no other significant assets beyond the home or property
  • the applicant accepts a legal charge over the property

A postponement may only be approved for one year. Interest will be charged on postponed rates on 30 June each year. The property cannot be sold or the title transferred until the debt is repaid to the Council.
