Commemorative Tree Scheme

Print Page

You can have a tree planted in order to:

  • honour a special person
  • celebrate a birth, anniversary or special event
  • express appreciation
  • remember a departed loved one.

Cost

Commemorative trees cost $184 (GST inclusive). This pays for the tree, its planting and initial care, and assists with maintenance over its lifetime.

You will receive a certificate suitable for framing with a photo of your tree species, its GPS location and details of the planting. If you wish, a photo can be taken on the day (cost: $20, booking required).

The type of tree will be based upon availability and horticultural suitability. All trees will be at least five years old and approximately one metre high.

Commemorative trees which die or are vandalised within five years of the planting date will be replaced at no cost to the applicant.

Planting a tree

You and your family and friends may want to plant or help plant the tree.

Dates will be set aside each winter when staff will be available to assist if necessary.

All planting must take place during winter to ensure the trees get off to a good start.

There are five sites in the city where commemorative trees can be planted:

  • Charles Plimmer Park, Mount Victoria (now full)
  • Karori Cemetery
  • Makara Cemetery
  • Victory Gardens, Alexandra Road, Mount Victoria
  • Willowbank Park, Tawa.

If you want to bury a placenta, or scatter or bury ashes during the tree planting, discuss this with Council Parks and Gardens staff at an early stage. There may occasionally be a site where this is not possible for cultural reasons, for example, at Victory Gardens.

To apply for a tree, fill out the form below and send it in with your cheque.
