The Council issues residents' parking permits - and exemption permits for coupon parking areas - as part of its transport strategy for managing traffic and parking in the city.
A Residents' Parking Permit allows you to park in coupon parking zones as well as parking spaces marked 'residents parking' within your suburb. A Coupon Exemption Permit allows you to park in coupon parking zones within your suburb.
Permits are issued to specific vehicles. If you buy a new vehicle you will also need a new permit. Any remaining time on the permit from your old vehicle will be loaded onto your new permit.
On-street parking is reserved for residents in some parts of the city where parking spaces are in high demand.
Residents' parking spaces are clearly signposted, and monitored by traffic wardens.
You may only apply for a Residents' Parking Permit if your main place of residence is within a residents' parking area. Possession of a permit does not guarantee a parking space.
Residents' Parking Permits cost $115 per year (non-refundable) and are also available for shorter periods, as required, at a reduced cost.

If you apply for a Residents' Parking Permit by lodging the application in person at the 40 Taranaki Street office, you will be issued a temporary permit - as long as your application is complete and correct. The temporary permit will allow you to park immediately. Within three working days you will be mailed the permanent permit sticker.
If you send in your completed application form and fee by mail, no temporary permit will be issued. You will be able to park only when the permanent permit is mailed out to you - within three working days.
If your main residence is in a coupon parking zone, this permit allows you to park in your zone without displaying a coupon.
