The Pacific communities are a vital part of Wellington. The Council has a number of initiatives designed to support and develop Pacific communities.
Pacific Forums
The Pacific Forums are a key opportunity for Pacific communities and Wellington City Council to share ideas affecting the community. They are held twice a year.
Discussion groups focus on a relevant theme and make recommendations to improve the lives of Pacific peoples. For example, the Pacific Advisory Group was a direct result of a past Pacific Forum.
The forums are attended by the Mayor, Councillors, the Chief Executive Officer, Senior Management and other council staff.
Advisor to Pacific Communities
The Advisor to Pacific Communities is responsible for developing positive relationships between the Council and the Pacific communities in Wellington city.
Pacific Advisory Group members
The Pacific Advisory Group, established in December 2003, is a link between the Council and Wellington's Pacific communities. It is designed to have representatives from Wellington's six main Pacific nation groups - Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, Samoa, Tokelau and Tonga.
The group's role is to:
- facilitate consultation with Pacific communities
- help Pacific communities understand Council processes
- enable Pacific peoples to participate in the Council’s
decision-making processes
- help the Council understand the needs of Pacific communities
and how these may be resolved
Intercultural Relationships Framework
The Council has established a framework to improve intercultural relationships in Wellington by:
- valuing cultural diversity
- recognising the social and economic benefits of more interaction with ethnic communities
- creating equal access to the Council for all Wellington residents
