The Council's Kaitakawaenga Māori works to develop positive relationships between Māori, the Council, government agencies, community organisations and individuals.

The role of the Kaitakawaenga Māori is to:

  • provide advisory services to Rōpu Māori
  • strengthen Māori communities by providing community development information, support, advice, and access to resources
  • consult with the wider Māori community to identify community needs
  • participate in, and represent the Council at, Māori community meetings
  • support Māori community networks and partnerships
  • work with Rōpu Māori and other groups to define social issues and needs, identify solutions and encourage community self-help and responsibility
  • provide reports on the needs of Rōpu Māori, and issues affecting them
  • facilitate the development of Māori community projects and initiatives
  • identify, produce and distribute Māori community resources
  • provide cultural advice to elected officials and Council staff.
