The Council's Cultural Advisor / Kaiārahi Tikanga Māori helps to develop Wellington City Council's relationship with Wellington Māori, and strengthen the capability of all to achieve community outcomes.
The Cultural Advisor / Kaiārahi Tikanga Māori:
- builds strong relationships with Wellington Māori, specifically iwi, community leaders / influencers and other stakeholder groups
- facilitates linkages between the wider Council and Wellington Māori within a culturally-safe framework that is tikanga-based
- develops and maintains a current understanding of the aspirations and needs of Wellington Māori contributing to, supporting and/or leading Treaty Relations work on designated projects, events and community issues
- facilitates and supports relationships between Wellington Māori, the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Councillors and the Council officers, fostering the development of partnership and access to te reo and tikanga advice and support
- facilitates and promotes iwi / mana whenua as the primary providers of cultural advice and support to the people of this city
- maintains an understanding of the views of Wellington Māori in relation to the suite of products and services that the Council provides and be able to communicate these to management and work to facilitate resolution of any issues
- identifies opportunities to enhance service delivery for Wellington Māori within existing budgets and support management to implement them
- identifies and maintains a database and network of Wellington Māori, including kaumatua, iwi / hapu-based groups; urban / pan-iwi organisations and social services providers who might participate in quarterly 'kōrero club' and other Treaty Relations engagement opportunities
- supports the Manager, Treaty Relations and Director, Citizen Engagement with local information, te reo and tikanga assistance as required.
