In relation to any hotel or tavern, this includes any part of the hotel or tavern that is used principally or exclusively for the sale, supply or consumption of liquor.

Club

Any club or voluntary organisation (chartered, incorporated or otherwise) that participates in or promotes any sport or other recreational activity. A club does not operate for profit or gain.

Club Licence

A licence to sell and supply liquor on the premises for consumption on the premises, to any member of the club or any person who is a guest of, and accompanied by a member of the club, and to a member of any other club with reciprocal visiting rights.

Conveyance

Any ship, ferry, aircraft, hovercraft, train, coach or other vehicle used to transport people.

Greater Interest

A person with a greater interest is someone who is likely to be more affected by an application for a liquor licence than most other people - for instance a resident living in the same street as the proposed premises.

Guardian

A guardian within the meaning of the Care of Children Act 2004. It is not a family friend, any other relative, school teacher or coach. The definition under the Act is of a person who has:

  1. all duties, powers, rights, and responsibilities that a parent of the child has in relation to the upbringing of the child:
  2. every duty, power, right, and responsibility that is vested in the guardian of a child by any enactment:
  3. every duty, power, right, and responsibility that, immediately before the commencement, on 1 January 1970, of the Guardianship Act 1968, was vested in a sole guardian of a child by an enactment or rule of law.

Hotel

Any premises used principally to provide the public with accommodation, liquor, meals and other refreshments for consumption on the premises.

Licensed Premises

These include any premises or any part of the premises where liquor may be sold with a liquor licence. The licensed area is defined by plans submitted with the application to the District Licensing Agency or Liquor Licensing Authority.

Licensee

The person or entity that holds a current liquor licence.

Liquor

Defined in the Sale of Liquor Act 1989 as including spirits, wine, ale, beer, porter, honey mead, stout, cider and perry containing 1.15% or more of alcohol by volume.

Off Licence

A licence to sell or deliver liquor on or from the premises with the provision for complementary supply of liquor by way of sample on the premises to which the licence relates.

On Licence

A licence to sell and supply liquor on the premises for consumption on the premises.

Parent

Natural, adoptive or foster parent.

Prohibited Persons

Any person under the age of 18 years and anyone who is intoxicated.

Restaurant

Any premises where the sale and supply of food to the public for consumption on the premises is (or is intended to be) the principal purpose of business.

Restricted Area

This could be a bar, dance venue, pool hall or public bar. People under 18 years are not permitted in a restricted area.

Supervised Area

This could be a bar or a dance venue. People of any age may be present in a supervised area, provided they are accompanied by their parent or guardian. The manager of the licensed premises is responsible for establishing proof of the relationship and is entitled to request identification or other proof establishing the relationship exists.

Tavern

Any premises where the sale and supply of alcohol is (or is intended to be) the principal purpose of business.

Undesignated Area

This could be a cafe, restaurant, sporting club, or function venue. People of any age may be in an undesignated area unaccompanied.
