There is one landfill operating in Wellington city - the Southern Landfill in Owhiro Bay. The Northern Landfill is now closed because it is full.
The Council's focus is on making the Southern Landfill last as long as possible. Much of the rubbish people take to landfills could be recycled or composted. Landfills are for rubbish you can't dispose of by recycling and kerbside collections.
It takes hundreds of years for the rubbish in landfills to break down. You can make a positive difference to Wellington's environment by recycling or composting as much of your rubbish as you can.
Commercial Customers
Commercial customers are those who:
- have an account with the Council landfill
- deliver waste in a truck (any vehicle that's not a car, van or ute).
A minimum charge of $39 applies to all commercial customers. The landfill doesn't accept commercial waste and trucks on Sundays.
Green Waste
Green waste
Green waste - lawn clippings, weeds, tree prunings and logs less than 10cm in diameter - is turned into compost by Living Earth Ltd at the Southern Landfill. Green waste is cheaper to get rid of than other waste.
Flax, bamboo and kitchen waste isn't 'green waste' and should be disposed of at the landfill as general waste.
As an alternative you could compost your kitchen waste at home with the help of worm farm systems, bokashi or any of the other home composting units that are now available.
There is a separate area for green waste at the landfill.
