Tenants of City Housing are responsible for ensuring they keep their homes well ventilated. Household mould and mildew can harm peoples' health, particularly people with allergies and asthma.
Tips for Controlling Condensation
Everyday household activities such as cooking, washing, showering and gas heating produce moisture. There are several things you can do to control condensation in your home:
- Keep some windows open whenever possible. It's best to keep several windows slightly open than one window wide open. This creates a cross-breeze.
- Try to confine condensation to the bathroom and kitchen by closing doors when showering and cooking, and keeping windows open in these rooms. Cook with lids on pots to reduce steam.
- Wipe down any windows and surfaces that collect condensation.
- Ensure your clothes dryer is vented to the outside.
- A combination of good ventilation and heat, about five degrees higher than outside, helps minimise condensation.
- If you have a rangehood in your kitchen, make sure you use it when cooking.
- Make sure extractor fans in bathrooms are not blocked, and turn them on when bathroom and showers are being used, or when mositure is present in the air.
