Wellington City Council provides affordable housing for people with low incomes and special housing needs.
Te Ara Hou Flats, Constable Street, Newtown
With more than 2,300 rental units, City Housing plays an important part in the lives of many Wellingtonians.
As well as working with other agencies that provide housing assistance, the Council targets its services to where housing needs are not met by other providers.
Objectives
- To provide quality housing that responds to genuine need.
- To assist people with low-incomes and special needs.
- To give priority to groups most in need of housing.
- To offer support to people until they can participate in the private rental market.
Roles
- Tenancy management
Allocate, manage and terminate tenancies according to the Council's policies and within provisions of the Residential Tenancies Act 1986.
- Property management
Manage the Council's housing assets with sound business strategy while recognising the changing needs of tenants.
Housing Upgrade
In 2007 Wellington City Council entered into a $220 million Memorandum of Understanding with the Government to upgrade its housing properties over the next 20 years.
