General grants are under review as the Council works towards the 2012-22 Long Term Plan (LTP).

The Long Term Plan sets out what the Council will do over the next 10 years, and how much this will cost.

About the Grants

The general grants contain four grant pools:

  • Social
  • Cultural
  • Economic
  • Environmental

Purpose

Wellington City Council grants aim to help non-profit groups with local initiatives that contribute to the social, cultural, economic and environmental well-being of Wellington city and its people.

Social

  • Building capability and capacity within the community
  • Promoting personal and community safety
  • Promoting physically-active communities that encourage health and wellbeing
  • Supporting youth

Cultural

  • Strengthening partnerships with arts organisations, festival groups and institutions
  • Strengthening Wellington's position as the Arts Capital of New Zealand
  • Supporting Māori art with particular emphasis on grassroots organisations and contemporary Māori art
  • Supporting and increasing youth participation in arts
  • Supporting diversity and local sense of place through arts projects

Economic

  • Retaining core economic activity
  • Growing local emerging business and local economic activity

  • Restoring biodiversity or protecting streams

Criteria

In order to apply for a grant an organisation must:

  • be a legally constituted community group or organisation
  • not be an individual or group of individuals (nor be applying under an umbrella organisation)
  • give evidence of sound financial management
  • have reported adequately on any previous funding received.
