The general grants contain four grant pools:
- Social
- Cultural
- Economic
- Environmental
Value
In total, just over one million dollars is available from July 2007 to June 2008.
Purpose
Wellington City Council grants aim to help non-profit groups with local initiatives that contribute to the social, cultural, environmental and economic well-being of Wellington city and its people.
Social
- build capability and capacity within the community to promote social cohesion and sound social infrastructure
- support youth (10-25 years old)
- promote participation in sport and recreation
- promote personal and community safety.

Cultural
- strengthen partnerships with arts organisations, festival groups and institutions
- strengthen Wellington's position as the Arts Capital of New Zealand
- support Maori art with particular emphasis on grassroots organisations and contemporary Maori art
- support and increase youth participation in arts
- support diversity and local sense of place through arts projects.

Economic
Economic development initiatives such as:
- strengthening the city's status as a centre of creativity and innovation
- increasing Wellington's international links
- attracting and retaining skilled migrants
- encouraging the deployment of open access broadband infrastructure.

- promotion of water and energy efficiency and conservation, energy security, and the use of renewable energy sources
- stream protection
- strengthening partnerships with community groups to increase environmental awareness, community participation and the achievement of environmental goals.

Criteria
In order to apply for a grant an organisation must:
- be a legally constituted community group or organisation, not an individual or individuals (or apply under an umbrella organisation)
- give evidence of sound financial management
- have reported adequately on any previous funding received.
