Following the success of the Lions tour in Wellington in 2005 and annual NZI Rugby Sevens tournaments, the heart of Wellington city will be transformed into a fan-friendly area during Rugby World Cup 2011.

Events and activities taking place throughout Wellington's match period will include:

  • a world rugby village
  • giant outdoor screens with live match broadcasts
  • street parades
  • circus and street performers, dancers and cultural groups
  • multiple stages with live bands and DJs
  • harbour fireworks
  • public training sessions
  • an exhibition at Te Papa.

As with the NZI Sevens tournament, crowds are encouraged to wear costumes, street banners will be displayed, and Wellington businesses will have window-dressing competitions.
