LOVE NZ recycling bin
The Council supported Rugby New Zealand's vision to make Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011) environmentally sustainable. We worked with tournament organisers, the Government and regional stakeholders on the following key areas:
- recycling
- sustainable transport
- energy efficiency
- providing opportunities for Wellington residents and visitors to make RWC 2011 sustainable.
Recycling
For RWC 2011, the Council and Wellington Regional Stadium expanded recycling services by placing a mixture of temporary and permanent recycling bins throughout the city - all stamped with the Love NZ logo. This included:
- 30 new permanent recycling bins on the waterfront
- six additional permanent recycling bins in key pedestrian areas
- new recycling facilities for Wellington Railway Station
- new recycling facilities for the ferry terminals and ferries
- temporary recycling facilities at the RWC 2011 fan zones (entertainment areas).
Sustainable Transport
Wellington is a compact city with most major hotels, cruise-ship terminals, entertainment areas and transport terminals within walking distance of Wellington Regional Stadium.
In addition, the Council set a target of 90% of fans using sustainable transport (public transport and/or walking) to the stadium on game days. To support this, we provided:
- free public transport on quarter-final game days
- extra buses travelling to and from the entertainment district (Courtenay Place) and the stadium
- car-free zones around the stadium to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment
- additional parking spaces for long-distance coaches.
Energy Efficiency
The Council also reviewed energy efficiency in RWC 2011 facilities. As a result, improvements were made in playing and training facilities such as boiler upgrades, extra lighting controls and improved water heating.
Living Legends
On Sunday 25 September visitors, Wellington residents and local rugby clubs were invited to a tree-planting day near Berhampore golf course as part of a restoration project and in honour of rugby legend Sir Brian Lochore.
