The Council supported Rugby New Zealand's vision to make Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011) environmentally sustainable. We worked with tournament organisers, the Government and regional stakeholders on the following key areas:
For RWC 2011, the Council and Wellington Regional Stadium expanded recycling services by placing a mixture of temporary and permanent recycling bins throughout the city - all stamped with the Love NZ logo. This included:
Wellington is a compact city with most major hotels, cruise-ship terminals, entertainment areas and transport terminals within walking distance of Wellington Regional Stadium.
In addition, the Council set a target of 90% of fans using sustainable transport (public transport and/or walking) to the stadium on game days. To support this, we provided:
The Council also reviewed energy efficiency in RWC 2011 facilities. As a result, improvements were made in playing and training facilities such as boiler upgrades, extra lighting controls and improved water heating.
On Sunday 25 September visitors, Wellington residents and local rugby clubs were invited to a tree-planting day near Berhampore golf course as part of a restoration project and in honour of rugby legend Sir Brian Lochore.
