Rugby World Cup 2011 - Host City Wellington.

New Zealand is the host of Rugby World Cup 2011, with matches around the country from 9 September to 23 October 2011.

Wellington has been confirmed as a venue for seven matches, including two quarter-finals matches and five pool matches from 11 September to 9 October.

Rugby World Cup History

The inaugural Rugby World Cup (RWC) was held in 1987 and every four years since. It has become one the world's most popular sporting events.

Under the control and direction of the International Rugby Board (IRB), the RWC is the financial engine that drives the development of Rugby worldwide, with revenues providing funds for member unions that assist in the game's expansion and development.

RWC 2011 Planning

Planning for RWC 2011 is underway in the Wellington region. A Regional Coordination Group (RCG) has been established consisting of the following representatives:

  • Wellington Regional Stadium
  • Wellington Rugby Football Union
  • Positively Wellington Tourism
  • Wellington City Council (representing local authorities in the region)
  • Greater Wellington Regional Council
  • New Zealand Police

In the Wairarapa, local authorities, the Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union and various tourism agencies have joined to promote the hosting of teams in their area.

Wellington Projects

A number of projects in Wellington are underway or planned to be completed before RWC 2011. These include:

  • development / extension of the Wellington International Airport terminal
  • introduction of 70 new rail units and 61 new trolley buses
  • new hotel / apartment developments
  • upgrade of Courtenay Place area
  • development of the new 12-court Indoor Community Sports Centre
  • development of artificial training surfaces
  • upgraded links between Wellington's central business district and Wellington Regional Stadium.
