Every year Wellington city hosts a wide range of events, including concerts, sporting matches, live theatre and dance, exhibitions and festivals. The Council supports many of these events through grants, event coordination, and promotional activities.

Matariki - Māori New Year

Matariki shines on the New Year.

Matariki

Matariki is a celebration of the Māori New Year. It begins with the first new moon after the Matariki star cluster - or Pleiades - appears in the dawn sky. This year Matariki took place on 24 June.

In honour of Matariki, the Council is supporting Matariki festival events taking place from 9 June - 31 July.


Japan Festival

6 - 11 July, Michael Fowler Centre, Town Hall Auditorium & Ilott Theatre

One week of Japanese themed activities, including a musical fair, business breakfast and highlighted by a Japan festival day with food stalls, crafts and entertainment.

The Wellington Film Festival is a longstanding highlight of the Wellington arts calendar, showcasing a wide selection of films across many genre. The festival also hosts international and local filmmakers, giving audiences a chance to learn what motivates and inspires those behind the camera.
