The Council seeks to balance its support for community events such as protests, parades, sports and cultural events with the interests of public safety and minimal nuisance.

Sometimes street events require special permission from the Council.

Notify us if you are organising an activity or event that:

  • may affect vehicle or pedestrian traffic
  • may increase traffic to a specific area (concerts, sports)
  • may require a road or footpath closure (parades, marches, runs, rallies)
  • may require signage adjacent to a road

Permission for Road & Footpath Closures

Any organisation, business or individual who is planning an activity that requires closure of a vehicle lane, parking area or footpath needs permission from the Council. This could apply to:

  • protest, march, rally
  • parade, street celebration, cultural event
  • race, runs

To initiate the permissions process, you can complete the online request form or contact us directly by phone. Simple closures require about 10 days to process. Complex closures can take up to a year, depending on the scale of your event.

Fees may apply to recover administration and planning costs.

Road Closure Request Form

Once you make a request, a meeting is scheduled to review any other requirements that are relevant to your event including:

  • traffic and pedestrian management plans
  • emergency management plans
  • risk management issues
  • health and safety
  • public liability insurance
