Discussion groups focus on a relevant theme and work to make recommendations that improve the lives of ethnic communities in Wellington.

Past forums have covered topics such as employment and safety. They have resulted in the setting up of:

Interpreting Service

Wellington City Council offers an interpreting service to improve communication between ethnic communities and the Council.

To use the interpreting service:

  • come in to any Council Service Centre
  • tell the council officer your name and the language you speak
  • wait for the officer to contact an interpreter

They will arrange a three-way telephone conversation between you, the interpreter and the relevant Council officer.

If you have a detailed enquiry, Council staff can make an appointment for an interpreter to come to the Council office and work through the issue with you.

Intercultural Relationships Framework

The Council has established a framework to improve intercultural relationships in Wellington by:

  • valuing Wellington’s cultural diversity
  • recognizing the social and economic benefits of more interaction with ethnic communities
  • creating equal access to the Council for all Wellington residents
