Home Energy Saver Programme

The Home Energy Saver Programme helps Wellington households to assess energy efficiency opportunities in their home and to take practical action.

Households in Wellington are eligible for a free, impartial Home Energy Saver assessment from the Council's contracted service providers - Home&dry. Following the assessment, the assessor - or coach - will give the household an "action plan" that is tailored and prioritised according to the households needs.

The initial assessment, which takes about two hours, is free. Coaches will have a range of easy-to-install products with them, including low-flow shower heads, energy-efficient light bulbs, hot water cylinder wraps and draught stoppers, which they can put in on the spot if people want them to. Households are eligible for 50% off the costs, up to the value of $115.

The Home Energy Saver Programme is part of the Council's 2010 Climate Change Action Plan. The main aims of the programme are to:

  • empower households to take action on climate change in the home
  • reduce energy consumption (and greenhouse gas emissions)
  • reduce barriers to the uptake of energy efficiency.

The Home Energy Saver Assessment is based on the New Zealand Green Building Council's Homestar system assessment. The assessment was developed to help households improve the performance of their homes, making them warmer, healthier and more sustainable.

Warm Up Wellington

The Warm Up Wellington project aims to help around 115 low-income households insulate their homes from July 2011 to June 2012.

The offer is only available to households with community service cards. Prioritisation will be given to households with high health needs. To find out whether you may be eligible, contact:

Sustainability Trust

Phone: 0508 787 824

Wellington City Council, the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), Capital and Coast District Health Board and Sustainability Trust are partners for this project. EECA will provide for up to 60% of the cost of the insulation retrofit and the Council and its partners will provide top-up funding. Sustainability Trust is contracted to deliver the retrofits.

The project is part of the Council's Climate Change Action Plan and the Council is looking to extend the project by attracting third-party sponsorship.

Greater Wellington Regional Council Assistance

If the up-front cost of installing insulation or heating is a barrier, you may be eligible for assistance from Greater Wellington Regional Council. This assistance allows you to put the remaining cost of insulation or heating (after the EnergyWise grant) onto your rates bill.

You can then pay off the cost over nine years - with interest - through your rates.

Solar Water Heating

Water heating can make up to 30% of your home energy bill. Solar water heating harnesses the free energy of the sun and can be used with a back-up system to ensure a continuous supply of hot water. EnergyWise can offer $1,000 towards the cost of installing solar water heaters - conditions and eligibility criteria apply.
