Drinking water, stormwater and wastewater

Wellington Water is contracted to manage the drinking water, stormwater and wastewater services for the Wellington City Council.

Recreational water quality monitoring

Greater Wellington Regional Council regularly monitors the water quality of our swimming sites and is responsible for managing pollution through responding to environmental incidents.

If you notice a problem with water quality at a beach or river, report it to GWRC on 0800 496 734 (24-hour hotline). This will help support all of the work that is happening to improve the water quality in the Wellington region.

Water usage

The total water supplied to Wellington City is about 30 billion litres per year.

Drinking fountains

Locations of drinking fountains along the waterfront, throughout the city and in our parks and reserves.

Water tanks and water containers

You can buy 200 litre water tanks to supply your household with water in the event of an emergency.

Water treatment

Wellington's drinking water supply is collected and treated by the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC).

Water policies and bylaw

The Council has several policies and bylaws which aim to conserve water.

History of the water network

The modern, clean and reliable water supply that Wellingtonians enjoy today is a far cry from the drinking water available to Māori and early European immigrants.
