The Wellington City Rescue Team is a certified Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team composed of volunteers. The group operates throughout Wellington city and, if required, throughout New Zealand.

USAR teams locate and rescue people trapped after disasters, such as building collapses, landslides or earthquakes.

Wellington's Emergency Management Office calls upon the Rescue Team to help in the event of large-scale emergencies which threaten to overwhelm the Council's usual capacity to provide emergency services.

Training

The Rescue Team's USAR training covers a wide range of emergency skills including general rescue and basic fire fighting techniques, first aid and technical rescue operations. The team is prepared to work with the police, fire forces and ambulance services, as well as other local, regional and national USAR teams.

Volunteer

The Rescue Team is always looking for new volunteers for:

  • Operations - rescuing and caring for the trapped and injured during disasters. Operations members may be required to perform physically challenging tasks in hazardous situations for long periods of time. This role calls for a high commitment to preparedness and training, but can be rewarded with the satisfaction of helping those at risk in times of need.
  • Support - performing administrative tasks for the operations team. Support members help with the day-to-day management of the team and provide for the team's general welfare during extended operations. The support members are a critical part of any USAR team.
