The most immediate help available after a disaster is from people nearby when the event occurs. That means it is your work colleagues, neighbours, friends, family and members of the community who are the ones who will be giving or needing help.

We offer training for volunteers in Civil Defence Emergency Management so you can help in the event of an emergency.

Training

All volunteers have to go through our induction training programme before becoming a Civil Defence Emergency Management Volunteer. This seven-session course includes modules covering:

  • personal readiness
  • health and safety, and stress
  • introduction to civil defence emergency management
  • radio communication
  • information management
  • emergency welfare
  • Civil Defence Centre operations.

Further training in Civil Defence Centre management, leadership and welfare supervision is available.

Possible Volunteer Tasks

  • Educating people on emergency preparedness
  • Providing welfare to displaced people
  • Gathering and distributing emergency information
  • Registering affected people
  • Operating communications equipment
  • Staffing the local civil defence centre

Our volunteers can also become involved with giving training and other activities around the Emergency Management office, or volunteer with the Emergency Response Team and Rural Fire Force.
