Lost Dogs

The best way to find a lost dog is by ensuring it is registered. That way if it wanders, escapes, or gets lost, someone can identify it and you can be contacted.

If you have lost your dog please contact DSS directly. You may also want to contact neighbours and post photos and descriptions on local notice boards.

Owners are legally responsible for keeping their dog under control at all times. Failure to do so is an offence under Section 53 of the Dog Control Act with a fine of up to $3000 or an infringement fee of $200.

Any dog found at large can be impounded at the owner's expense.

If the dog is identifiable, the owner will be notified by phone or written notice.

Dogs that are unclaimed after seven days become the property of Wellington City Council and they can be adopted or put down.

Fees

No dog will be released until all costs have been paid. Failure to claim an impounded dog does not relieve the owner from costs.

Offence
Fee
First impounding $75.00
Subsequent impounding in same registration year $150.00
Daily sustenance fee $15.00
After hours callout $25.00
