Women enjoying a night out

The Council, along with Police and ACC, is promoting simple ways people can take responsibility for their own safety when out and about in the city.

A range of resources to support people in making sensible decisions around personal safety have been produced and distributed.

The resources include information on:

  • when the last bus or train leaves Wellington
  • how to minimise the risk of cars being stolen or broken into
  • personal safety tips

Staying Safe

When big events such as the Rugby Sevens, Student Orientation, Cuba Street Carnival and other festivals come to Wellington, personal safety is especially important.

There are more people out and about and more alcohol is consumed. This can make the central city a riskier place to be, particularly at night.

Safety Tips

The following tips will help you stay safe in the city:

  • Stick with your friends
  • Plan your trip home
  • Remember the liquor ban that applies in public places
  • If you are parking a car choose somewhere well lit and don't leave property visible inside
  • If you see someone in trouble call the Police on 111 or the Council on (04) 499 4444 if it is less urgent

Host Responsibility

Everyone is responsible for safety. If you are having a party, BBQ or celebration here are some tips:

  • Be a great host and serve alcohol responsibly
  • Don't serve alcohol to drunk people
  • Don't serve alcohol to people under 18 years (unless parental consent and supervision is provided)
  • Offer low and non-alcoholic drinks
  • Provide food that is tasty and filling
  • Promote safe transport options for your guests, including calling taxis or Dial-a-Driver
  • Ensure those serving alcohol are aware of these tips

Resource Packs

If you would like a resource pack with more safety information call the Council on (04) 499 4444.

Alternatively, you can print out the safety poster and tips below.
