Makara Cemetery

A memorial placement can be authorised by the owner of the Exclusive Right of Interment or, if the owner is deceased, the immediate next of kin.

Memorial plaques and headstones must meet each cemetery’s design specifications. This is to preserve a consistent visual standard throughout the cemeteries.

Plaques

The Council’s cemeteries offer bronze plaques. These are produced by a specialist and can be ordered at the Karori Cemetery office.

Memorial plaques take about 15 working days to complete.

Removal & Installation

Cemetery staff can be hired to remove or install plaques. If you prefer to have a commercial mason remove or install a memorial, you need a cemetery work permit. Stone masons will usually do this on your behalf. Permits require 24 hours notice.

Additional Inscriptions

If you wish to add an inscription on an existing plaque, cemetery staff can arrange this. The work is carried out by the cemeteries’ professional plaque contractor.

Book of Remembrance

Family and friends can honour the deceased on the anniversary of their death by making a calendar entry in the cemetery’s Book of Remembrance. The book is on display and pages are turned daily to present memorial messages.
