Czech-born refugee Frederick Turnovsky settled in Wellington in 1940. Soon after his arrival, Turnovsky established Tatra - a successful leather goods company.
For much of his life Turnovsky was active in both trade and music circles. He helped establish the Wellington Chamber Music Society and was awarded an OBE in 1965 for services to the arts.
