Cremations - Ashes

Print Page

People booking cremations need to advise Cemetery administration what they wish to have done with the cremated remains. There are several options:

  • a representative of the deceased collects the remains within five working days
  • the Crematorium delivers remains to a place specified by the family
  • a representative of the deceased arranges an attended or un-attended ash interment
  • a representative of the deceased arranges an attended or un-attended ash scattering

If the family’s wishes are unknown, the funeral director is responsible for collecting or dispatching the ashes. Otherwise, ashes are sent to the funeral director at their expense.

In general, ashes can be collected 24 hours after the cremation. Special arrangements can be made for earlier collection, however additional costs may apply.

Scattering of Ashes

Unattended Scattering

Cemetery staff scatter ashes in an area specified by the cemetery supervisor, between three and five working days after the cremation. To request this service, you need to indicate this choice on the same form you use to book the cremation.

Attended Scattering

An attended scattering is where family and friends are present when ashes are scattered. Complete the relevant section of this form and return it to Cemetery administration when making a cremation booking.

Interment of Ashes

Ash interments are managed in the same way as casket burials. To book an ash interment, complete the Application for Right of Burial at least 24 hours before the scheduled interment.

For attended ash interments, Cemetery technicians prepare the grave, attend the interment (unless otherwise specified), and reinstate the grave after the interment service.

Unattended ash interments are performed by cemetery technicians on Thursdays and Fridays.
