Repairs to a leaky building

The Financial Assistance Package is now available to eligible homeowners of leaky buildings in Wellington City.

Weathertight Financial Assistance Package

The Council and Government have offered to contribute 25 percent each towards homeowners' agreed repair costs, with the homeowners funding the remaining 50 percent. This package:

  • is only eligible for leaky homes that have been built within the last 10 years
  • includes homes in multi-unit complexes
  • doesn't replace the current disputes and litigation processes for leaky homes - it is an alternative option
  • is conditional on homeowners giving up the right to sue the Council or Crown in relation to their claim. However homeowners do keep their right to claim against other liable parties such as builders, developers and manufacturers of defective building products, as they see fit.
  • offers homeowners the certainty of a financial contribution and helps to get more leaky homes fixed faster.
