Building Consent - Fees

On 1 July 2010, we introduced a new fee structure for building consents. The fee payable is now dependent not only on the project value of the work involved, but also on the category. The fees booklet below provides more information and reflects the new fee structure. Use the booklet as a guide when applying for a building consent.

A payment must accompany a building consent application. You can use the information in the booklet and the Fee Estimate Sheet at the back to help you calculate the fee payable.

Additional Information & Fees

Occasionally, as we work on your application and seek further information, we may find additional areas to investigate (for example, the need for a compliance schedule or an assessment by an environmental health officer).

We may also need additional information not supplied with your initial application and this may result in additional fees. If this is the case, we will send you an invoice for these fees and request you pay this before we issue the building consent.

Additional charges may also apply if we need to send the consent to the New Zealand Fire Service for comment.

Background Information

Building consent fees are set by the Wellington City Council under the Building Act. They are reviewed annually.

BRANZ and Department of Building and Housing levies apply to all work valued at $20,000 or more. The BRANZ levy is currently $1.00 per $1,000. The Department of Building and Housing levy is $2.01 per $1,000. Where the consent is staged, the payable levy is assessed on the total project value.
